The Los Angeles Clippers is parting ways with franchise star Blake Griffin in a blockbuster trade that numerous league sources have confirmed will deal the 5-time NBA All-Star to Detroit in exchange for Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Willie Reed, Brice Johnson, and a future first and second-round draft pick.

Talk of Griffin leaving town had been brewing for weeks leading up to Monday’s (January 29) move, despite the organization having just signed Griffin to a five-year, $175 million max extension in the offseason. Sources close to the situation in L.A. say that the team doesn’t see itself as a realistic postseason competitor and would at this point much rather continue to strip down and rebuild – regardless of a 25-24 record that currently has them only one game out of playoff contention.

With Chris Paul, J.J. Redick, and now Griffin gone from what was once one of basketball’s most promising roster’s, the Clippers are banking on Coach Doc Rivers to make it work with Bradley and Harris joining the likes of DeAndre Jordan and Danilo Gallinari, until they can use the $40 million in cap space the trade opens up, for a player of pedigree in free agency in the coming Summer.

Griffin responded to the news by tweeting out a gif of a shocked Will Smith on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which you can view above. Attributes
