Former Nevada Wolf Pack star Cameron Oliver did not hear his name called at the 2017 NBA Draft, but he was one of the first players to sign as an undrafted free agent and it was the Houston Rockets who signed the athletic forward to a multi-year deal. it’s hard to believe this young man was not drafted but as soon as the lights dimmed his agent phone started ringing, all I have to say is THE NBA HAS JUST AWAKEN A BEAST! The Houston Rockets just received a steal. Cameron Oliver will receive the contract of a lifetime here soon and every NBA team will bite their tongue wondering how did they let this kid get away.
Oliver was a two-year star for the Wolf Pack and is an extremely athletic player who was always throwing down monster dunks nearly every game. He helped lead Nevada to a 28-win season and tournament appearance by averaging 16 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.
Here is what we mentioned about Oliver in our draft profile:
Cameron Oliver was a key contributor in Nevada basketball’s resurgence. He improved his numbers from his freshman season to his sophomore season and improved his three-point shooting as well. Oliver has the physical tools that to catch on in the NBA and could thrive in the right setting.
He does need to develop a better post-up game, sharpen up his shooting mechanics and improve his defense to be a contributing player on a NBA team. The popular comparison for Oliver is Golden State Warriors forward Draymond and like Oliver, Green has the same type of versatility and weakness as well coming out of college. If Oliver can improve in those areas where he struggles at, then he can be a successful player at the next level.
